Chapter fifteen
Levi
Levi watched a streak of lightning split the sky and traced the shape against the window, the rumble of thunder drawing closer.
The wind and rain had started midafternoon and progressively gotten worse from there. Heâd overheard in the cafeteria that classes had been cancelled and people were being sent home early to avoid the worst of the weather conditions.
The forecast had been predicting a storm, issuing warnings and encouraging people to stay at home and not to fly.
Levi actually found himself soothed by the rain pounding on the windowpane outside. Heâd always liked storms; something about the sheer natural strength of them had always fascinated him. Not that they didnât terrify him at the same time, but he was able to put it aside and concentrate on the beauty of them. And thatâs how he found himself wrapped in a blanket in front of the window with his knees drawn up slightly to support the sketchpad in his lap.
His wings were out. It wasnât a grooming day, but he was trying to keep what Nelson had said to heart and leave them materialized for longer stretches. It was still hard not to give in to the desire to hide them away, and some days, he still avoided reflective surfaces entirely.
Heâd spent some time on the phone with his parents and then almost an hour convincing Jude that yes, he had everything he needed, and yes, he would be okay, and yes, he would call if something happened.
So he made sure he had everything he needed and then prepared to hole up in his room until it passed.
He assumed it wouldnât be anytime soon given the way the storm was getting progressively angrier, wind lashing the heavy rain around as the sky continued its ominous rumble of displeasure, striking out at the world like it wanted to split it at the seams.
It was after one harsh strike when everything went dark.
Levi dropped his pencil and gasped at the suddenness of it, stomach lurching and pulse picking up a frantic beat.
He hadnât once factored this into his outlook for the night, and hindsight was the worst sort of bitch.
Truly at a loss at what else to do, Levi stayed where he was and tried to run through a mental inventory. Did he have enough food and water? Yes. Did he have anything to light the room for now? No. Did he lock the door?
A knock reverberated through the room, and he jumped out of his skin.
Did he lock the door? He couldnât think past the panic long enough to remember.
âLevi?â
His voice was unexpected, but so welcome Levi could have cried with the relief coursing through him. Without a care for how it would look, he shakily got to his feet, shoving his art things in the direction of the table, before trying to navigate himself to the door in the gloom that had engulfed the room.
He knocked his shin into the coffee table and hissed.
âLevi? Is everything okay?â Arne asked in a concerned voice.
